Fossil Cabin Relocated
Discover Carbon County Wyoming celebrates the Fossil Cabin Safely Moved to Permanent Home at the Medicine Bow Museum
May 1, 2026—Carbon County, Wyoming— After years of planning, fundraising, and preservation efforts, the historic Fossil Cabin has officially arrived at its permanent home at the Medicine Bow Museum in Medicine Bow.
“We are incredibly grateful to the many donors, community supporters, and partners who believed in this project from the beginning,” said Leslie Jefferson, CEO of Discover Carbon County. “This project represents years of dedication and partnership from people, businesses, and organizations dedicated to preserving and celebrating Wyoming’s history.”
The project began in 2018 when the Medicine Bow Museum received the gift of the world-famous Fossil Cabin. Then, Museum Director Sharon Biamon accepted the gift and began fundraising efforts to relocate and preserve the structure. Early planning revealed the move would require far more extensive structural work than originally anticipated, temporarily delaying the project.
In spring 2024, Leslie Jefferson, CEO of Discover Carbon County, partnered with Biamon to revive the project. Biamon coordinated local contractors to strengthen the structure, prepare the original site for transport, and construct the cabin’s permanent foundation at the museum. An experienced large-structure moving company was also secured.
In July 2024, Discover Carbon County applied for Destination Development Grant funding through the Wyoming Office of Tourism. The Fossil Cabin relocation project was approved, and funding was received.
Over the following months, Sharon and Megan McComas, Sales and Business Development Manager of Discover Carbon County, oversaw crews who completed interior framing, structural stabilization, and groundwork to prepare the building for transport. In October 2025, additional support needs for the move were identified to ensure the cabin could be relocated safely. The necessary stabilization and preparation work was completed on May 8, 2026, with movers arriving in Medicine Bow on May 10.
The Fossil Cabin was successfully transported on May 13 and carefully lowered onto its permanent foundation on May 14. “The generous Destination Development funding from the Wyoming Office of Tourism made it possible to safely move the Fossil Cabin to its forever home,” added Leslie Jefferson. Final leveling and stabilization work will be completed in the coming weeks.
